LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman joined Ward 3 Councilman Bob Coffin Thursday, June 20 for the groundbreaking of the new Stupak Park at 300 W. Boston Ave.

For years the neighborhood behind the Stratosphere tower has been plagued by violent crime and drug activity but those who know the area best insist things are changing.

Among those changes is the new park which broke ground Thursday morning. News 3's Denise Rosch was there when the shovels dug in.

“We have been looking forward to putting a park back in this neighborhood since we took out Stupak Park to make a place for the new community center,” said Councilman Coffin. “I can’t think of a neighborhood that will welcome a new soccer field, playground and place for kids to play outside more than this one.”

The new park will be built on .6 acres formerly occupied by the original Stupak Community Center. The present Stupak Community Center, which opened January 2010 at 251 W. Boston Ave., occupies about 1.5 acres of land that formerly was Stupak Park.

The new Stupak Park will include these amenities:
  • Swing set,
  • Splash pad,
  • Two playground structures (tots 2-5 years old and youth 5-12 years old),
  • Drinking fountain,
  • Four shade structures with seating areas, and a
  • Small, synthetic-turf soccer field with goals, netting and lights
Construction on the park by Tand, Inc. is expected to begin in July, with completion scheduled for January 2014. City of Las Vegas Department of Public Works staff will manage the project. The $1.1 million cost is funded by a Community Development Block Grant.
