LAS VEGAS -- The LVMPD has responded to 17 sleep related infant deaths so far this year. Three of these tragedies have occurred within the last week.

One of the most recent infant death was Giana Barrios, a 5-month-old who died of positional asphxia. The Hispanic female died on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Creating a safe and secure sleeping environment is the first step in preventing such horrific events.

Guidelines recommended by the US Department of Health and Human Services include:
  1. Always position your baby on his/her back.
  2. Use a firm sleep surface such as a mattress covered by a fitted sheet.
  3. Remove pillows, blankets, sheepskins, crib bumpers or other objects that could cover your baby’s head from the sleep area.
  4. Infants should always sleep in a crib or bassinet with the appropriate safety ratings. Never allow an infant to sleep on an adult bed, couch or other furniture.
  5. Dress your baby in light sleeping clothing such as a one-piece sleeper.
  6. Co-sleeping with other children and adults can lead to a tragic death. Infants should always have their own sleep area which is free from obstructions.
