LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- We all know most weekends in Las Vegas get crowded but this one could be exceptional.

Thousands of peopole are headed to town to celebrate Mexican Independence Day; plus there's a huge fight this weekend.

This weekend is expected to pump millions into the local economy.

About 5,000 tourists are flying into McCarran Airport Thursday and all are receiving a warm and musical welcome.

This weekend 22 extra flights from Mexico are landing in Las Vegas for one of the busiest weekends of the year.

Mexican Independence Day and the boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will provide a huge economic boost to the city.

“The fights are very popular with our Mexican visitors so they schedule them specifically around those high travel weekends,” said Courtney Fitzgerald of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Enrique Gillomen says he's been saving and preparing for this weekend for three months.

“I’m very excited, for the fight and we’re going also to the canyons so we have a long journey,” Gillomen said.

The Nevada Athletic Commission says the sold out fight draws a crowd of about 16,000 and generates more than $19 million in ticket sales.

According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority—hotels in the valley are at 95 percent capacity and this weekend is expected to pump millions of dollars into the local economy.

“When we expect that type of occupancy it’s great for Las Vegas, the hotel rooms are full, people dinning in the restaurants, they’re going to the shows it’s just a different atmosphere here in las Vegas this weekend,” Fitzgerald said.

The overall number of passengers arriving at McCarran from Mexico is up more than 42 percent in just three years. The increase in flight activity includes non-stop flights from seven cities that don’t normally have direct service here.
