LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Rashard Acuna, 25, moved to Las Vegas to escape violence in Oakland, Calif.
About a year later he was found shot to death in the desert. His body was found face down in the desert south of the Las Vegas Strip.
Andrei Davis has been indicted by a grand jury for his murder. Acuna's mother spoke exclusively with News 3 about her son.
Family members say Acuna was trying to get his life back on track when he was killed. Acuna moved to Las Vegas with just $79 in his pocket and a dream of a better life. They say he was very happy here and he had just earned a promotion at his job when his life was cut short.
He was a popular music artist in Oakland, Calif., known as Ghost.
"We were just shocked because he was so intelligent and very caring," said his mother Renee Ringo by phone.
Acuna was Ringo’s youngest child. Ringo, who lives in California, describes the gut-wrenching moment she got the phone call from Acuna ’s best friend.
"He told me that Rashard had got shot and then I said well what hospital is he in? And he said that’s the problem and when he said that I knew he had passed," Ringo said.
Police say Rashard was murdered near La Cienega Street and Doobie Avenue around 7:30 on the evening of April 14. An investigation revealed Acuna was having a conversation with two men near a dark colored car before the shots went off.
Ringo says Rashard had come to visit her a week before his death. She says he was happy, planning to enroll in college and had just earned a promotion at work.
"He got killed before he got to finish all his paperwork," she said.
The man charged with his murder is convicted felon 21-year-old Andrei Davis. Court documents show Davis was on parole at the time of the murder. Phone records show calls between Davis and Acuna just two hours before the shooting and again near the scene where Acuna's body was found with a bullet through his back.
Police say Davis and another man stole Acuna’s phone and his car. Acuna’s Buick was later found torched.
"That car that they burnt up, he had only had it about three weeks and he was so proud of it," Ringo said.
It is unclear what led to the shooting, but according to police records, drugs may have been involved. Acuna’s family is still grappling with the loss.
Davis, meanwhile, faces one count each of murder with use of a deadly weapon; conspiracy to commit murder; conspiracy to commit robbery; robbery with use of a deadly weapon; and third-degree arson.
