LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada state officials are promising a weekend crackdown on drunken boating as part of a national enforcement effort dubbed "Operation Dry Water."

Nevada Department of Wildlife wardens patrol the state's lakes and waterways including the lake Mead and Mohave reservoirs in the south and lakes Tahoe, Lahontan, Topaz and the South Fork Reservoir in the north.

Capt. David Pfiffner says extra officers will be assigned to the busiest recreational waters to look for boaters operating watercraft under the influence.

Pfiffner points to U.S. Coast Guard statistics from 2008 attributing 17 percent of all boat accident deaths to alcohol or drug use.
