LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- This year 178 people have died on Nevada roads and Las Vegas drivers are more likely to get into a crash than most of the rest of the country, according to a study by Allstate Insurance.

Insurance companies use accident and claim information to help determine their rates so drivers in cities more prone to accidents, like Las Vegas, have higher insurance rates.

"We have a lot of drivers out there that we are responsible for."

Allstate insurance agent Jayar Hawley has been in the business for nearly 6 years. His office insures about 3,000 drivers and he says he's processed a lot of accident claims, especially in the city of Las Vegas.

"We probably handle about two to three claims a day," Hawley said.

That’s hundreds of claims each year at this office alone, according to Allstate's America's best drivers report Las Vegas drivers are among the most unsafe in the country, ranking in the bottom half in the nation.

Las Vegas is ranked 123 out of the 200 largest cities.

Using data from claims and accident reports, the study ranks 200 cities taking into account factors like distracted driving, weather conditions and population size all of which Hawley says can contribute to accidents.

"We have a lot of drivers and a lot of traffic that's kind of funneling into just a couple major freeways," Hawley said.

He says a lot of accidents happen when people are driving less than 35 miles per hour.

"When we're driving through a neighborhood or parking lot at 10 miles per hour, we kind of think 'oh we're going really slow,' we may not pay attention as much," Hawley said.
