NORTH LAS VEGAS (KSNV – A closer look at the City of North Las Vegas budget for 2014-15 shows plenty of savings, but also some spending increases in areas.

Expenditures for city-owned Aliante Golf Course could double next year, to as much as $325,000, because water allotment from Craig Ranch Park is no longer available.

A city official says Aliante was using the water allotted for Craig Ranch Park while the park was under construction, but now that it is open, Craig Ranch gets its less expensive water back and Aliante has to pay more.

North Las Vegas Acting Finance Director Darren Adair defended spending the taxpayers’ dollars on a golf course in such tough economic times.

“It's an asset to the community out there in that area, and one that the city currently has a responsibility to maintain,” Adair said. “We're doing our best to reduce those costs.”

Despite closing its jail nearly two years ago, North Las Vegas will spend an additions $1.4 million in its corrections budget for salaries, benefits and services. Adair said the city saves $10 million to $11 million as it pays Las Vegas to house its inmates.

North Las Vegas taxes, licenses and permits have increased, but federal grants are down $4.2 million.
