Police arrest sexual assault suspect near middle school

LAS VEGAS -- Metro police have arrested a man suspected of sexually assaulting and kidnapping a student near C.W. Woodbury MIddle School Wednesday morning.

LVMPD patrol officers responded at approximately 6 a.m. Wednesdayto C.W. Woodbury Middle School located at 3875 East Harmon Avenue to investigate reports of a juvenile who had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted.

The victim was locking up her bicycle at the school when she was assaulted multiple times by the male suspect who used an edged weapon during the attack.

The victim managed to escape her attacker and flag down a passing motorist who called police. Arriving patrol officers located the suspect a few blocks away from the school.

After a short foot pursuit the suspect, identified as 48 year-old Richard Martin Schlacta of California was taken into custody.

He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of:
  • Sexual Assault, victim under 14 (3 counts)
  • Attempt Sexual Assault, victim under 14
  • Kidnapping First degree
  • Coercion with force or threat of force
  • Battery with a deadly weapon
  • Battery with intent to commit Sexual Assault, victim under 16.
Prior to this incident Schlacta had no local arrest record.
