LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Victims of sexual assault have resources like the Rape Crisis Center, which sees 80 percent of victims in our valley.

However, the recovery process is long and often painful. Here's one young woman's fight that has lasted more than a decade.

Amanda Diaz mentions a happy moment from 2011 during a family vacation with her kids.

Sadly, memories from her childhood are not as pleasant.

“Basically he would come into my room late at night when everyone was sleeping and touch me or have me touch him. Basically that's what happened for all those years,” Diaz said. “It wasn't every night but I mean few times a week and then when my mom would be gone for work, it would be more.”

She was 7-years-old. Her attacker was her stepfather, who she doesn't want to name. The abuse went on for 10 years until, in an emotional rush, she told her mother.

“After we got home and called the police and he never stepped foot in the house that day,” she says.

This year, he was up for parole and a flood of memories and fear came back:

“I just thought how am I going to be defend myself now. “I'm not going to be ready like I was before,” Diaz said..

He was not released, although that doesn't remove the pain. In fact, she keeps in touch with her counselor from the Rape Crisis center to this day.

“I feel like the only peace I’ll have is when he is no longer breathing b/c i know that not only will he not harm me again but he won't do it to anyone else

Now her focus is on her family and keeping her kids safe.

“I've had that talk with her, not in great in detail., i don't care who it is, principal, teacher, bus driver, no one ever touches you inappropriately,” Diaz said.
