Boston, MA ( - The Boston Red Sox placed catcher David Ross on the 15-day disabled list because of a foot injury among a spate of roster moves Saturday.

Ross had been bothered by the plantar fasciitis recently and appeared to aggravate the problem in Friday's game against the New York Yankees. He struggled while running to first base on a groundout in the sixth inning and was replaced behind the plate by Christian Vazquez to start the seventh.

The 37-year-old Ross is batting just .192 with six homers and 12 RBI in 40 games this season.

Boston recalled catcher Dan Butler from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill the roster spot. Butler was batting .227 with four homers and 28 RBI in 76 games for the PawSox.

In other moves, the BoSox added pitcher Joe Kelly to the active roster and optioned pitcher Anthony Renaudo to the PawSox.

Kelly was acquired on Thursday from the St. Louis Cardinals, after going 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA in seven starts this season for the defending NL champions.
