BOULDER CITY (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- A veteran principal, educator and coach died Saturday while competing with his family as a team in the 10th annual Pumpkinman Triathlon.

Patrick Hayden, 59, was pronounced dead at 9:30 a.m. at Boulder City Hospital, according to the Clark County coroner's office. He was found unresponsive about 8:55 a.m. Saturday while swimming the first leg of the event. Family members were to do the running and bicycling legs of the competition.

Hayden was principal at Arbor View High School from its opening in 2005 until he retired from the Clark County School District in 2011. That same year he was named to the Southern Nevada High School Football Coaches Association's Hall of Fame as an administrator.

Just hours after his death, friends told News 3 reporter Antonio Castelan how much they liked Hayden.

An autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death was scheduled for Sunday, an examiner said.

At 8:55 a.m., a kayaker who was patrolling the event at Boulder Beach flagged down rangers who were nearby on a National Park Service patrol boat. When rangers arrived, the swimmer was found unresponsive, said Christie Vanover, spokeswoman for Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

CPR was initiated and the man was transported by ambulance to Boulder City Hospital where he pronounced dead at 9:30 a.m.

The triathlon was in danger of not being held because of the partial federal government shutdown that ended Wednesday.
