LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- As the valley grows, local classrooms are bursting.

As overcrowding reaches a fever pitch, the Clark County School Board is taking a hard look at how to deal with the problem.

Like so many other schools in the valley, portable classroooms are being used to deal with the overflow.

However, there are some schools that actually have room to grow. The board will be looking for solutions during the summer vacation.

Since the beginning of the year, Clark County School Board President Erin Cranor says 1,800 new students have arrived at local elementary schools.

"It's not an overstatement to say we're in a crisis at this point with our overcrowding and with the lack of seats for our young people to attend schools here in our valley. So we are looking at every single option that we can," Cranor said.

The district is financially strapped, so construction is out of the question. It is trying to find balance by shifting students, possibly.

"Of the underutilized schools, is there a way to get students to those schools out of overcrowded schools in a cost effective way," Cranor said.

The school board is just starting the process, and Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky is expected to collect information about desks available in the district's schools. Then boardmembers can pour over the data and figure out where they want to go with it.

"This summer were really going to take a fiscal look at the picture and saying, just out of all the things that we can consider, when we think about where students should be assigned to school, this summer let's specifically look at the fiscal situation," Cranor said.

Cranor says any changes most likely would happen in August of next year.
