LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- While the gun debate continues to simmer in Washington, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was back home in las Vegas today.

News 3's Mackenzie Warren caught up with Sen. Reid to discuss the hot button issue.

If you'll recall this was the same issue that stumped the Nevada state legislature.

Like Congress and the U.S. Senate, Nevada lawmakers could not agree to tighten background checks on gun purchases.

In Washington, the last Senate vote in April fell short by five votes.

Sen. Reid calls it a shame and he is vowing to bring this bill back up for a vote before the end of the year.

“This issue is very simple,” said Sen. Reid. “Someone who has severe mental problems or a criminal record; should they be able to purchase a gun, the obvious answer is 'no.' That’s why 90 percent of America people—not 90 percent of Democrats, through all demographics support this legislation and I’m going to bring it back when we have 60 votes.”

Senator Reid does not have 60 votes right now but he's talking to senators everyday to try and pick up 5 more members.

Nevada governor Brian Sandoval vetoed a bill that would require background checks for most gun purchases narrowly passed in the legislature.

The governor says the bill violated second amendment rights. But the few Nevada Republicans who voted for it say they were tired of waiting on Washington.
