LAS VEGAS -- A vacant house on the west side of the city was destroyed by fire late Sunday.

Damage in the fire of undetermined origin was estimated at $57,000. There were no reported injuries.

Las Vegas fire dispatchers received numerous 911 calls at 10:15 p.m. Sunday that a house at 305 N. Crestline Drive (Torrey Pines/Washington) was on fire. When firefighters arrived on scene they found a one-story wood frame house heavily involved with fire and the roof of the house already caving in.

Firefighter’s first concern was to surround the house and make sure it would not spread to the neighboring homes. Using a ladder truck and several fire hoses, firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in less than ten minutes.

The house was destroyed by the fire. Neighbors told fire investigators that the house has been vacant for at least two years and people were seen going into and leaving the house. There was also evidence that squatters may have been using the house. Fire investigators also found it appeared someone might have taken the copper wiring from the house. There were no utilities connected to the house.

Fire investigators were going to check previous fire reports to see if a fire had previously occurred at the same house in the past.

Firefighters could not enter the house because of the possibility of further collapse of the roof. Firefighters remained on scene watching over the house until late Monday morning making sure the house would not flare back up.

A fence was expected to be erected around the house later today.
