LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Street performers can be pushy and aggressive while posing for photos and asking for tips. City leaders say they've had enough.

One councilman says it's time to license and register the superheroes, cartoon characters and other street performers crawling all over the Fremont street experience.

The Fremont Street Experience has become a stage for street performers of all types of characters.

"Ad hoc performers down there trying to make their living off tips," said Las Vegas City Councilman Bob Beers. "Who are not very savory characters and who are very aggressive in their approach toward tourists and other visitors.'

It's these performers Beers is uneasy about. Making tips off of tourists, some of these performers are cloaked and wearing masks and are unidentifiable.

"The Metro Police Department that works that street, they've identified people who are known sex offenders for example," Beers said.

Councilman Beers is crafting an ordinance that would license and register Fremont Street Performers in the city. But he says, he has to be careful "to not infringe on people's First Amendment rights to communicate, but by the same token provide society some protection," Beers said.

Tourists seem receptive to the idea.

"I would feel more comfortable, safer, and I'd probably watch them more and put out more for the ones that are licensed," tourist Raegan Lovely said.

Seasoned performers in Las Vegas say they welcome some kind of licensing and registration as long as it's not expensive.
