NORTH LAS VEGAS (KSNV — A report concerning the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in North Las Vegas said the facility was justified when it left a 78-year-old blind veteran waiting for almost five hours.

Sandi Niccum was left waiting at the center in October for 4 hours, 45 minutes.

Friend Dee Redwin, who waited with her, said Niccum was crying for help and beating on the floor.

Niccum's alleged mistreatment prompted a VA investigation.

The investigation found the wait was “challenging for this patient” but justified because there were “numerous other patients” in more urgent need of attention.

However, the report also found no documentation that nurses checked in with Niccum every hour as local policy requires.

Niccum died a month later from cancer.
