LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- A local gay rights center is joining forces with HIV service organizations to introduce a new campaign in the fight against AIDS.

The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada and Aid for AIDS of Nevada will announced the launch of LGBTQ+, an integrated community campaign aimed at ending the HIV epidemic.

The campaign incorporates Treatment as Prevention, a new way of proactively tackling HIV that reduces the risk of transmission by 96 percent and could effectively stop HIV in its tracks.

The idea is to reduce new HIV infections through three simple steps: getting tested, seeking treatment and staying in treatment. Local leaders say over the years the spread of HIV has been overshadowed by other hot-button issues like marriage equality and hate crimes.

Now they say it’s time to bring it back into the spotlight.

“The rate of HIV/AIDS among the heterosexual community has remained consistent, but within the homosexual community it has increased 22 percent,” said Tom Kovach, interim executive director of The Center, “so it’s so important that we refocus energy time resources back on importance of ending epidemic"

Leaders say they are starting with the demographic with the highest infection rate -- gay young men between the ages of 18 and 29.

They plan to spread the word through various community events.
