LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) — A local mother facing several charges for a deadly car accident on Interstate 15 made her first appearance in court this morning.
Wendy Carrion faces misdemeanor and felony charges, including involuntary manslaughter, for the death of one of the children, her niece.
The Nevada Highway Patrol says Carrion overcorrected near the D Street off-ramp, causing the rollover that occurred just after 8 a.m. July 2.
Carrion appeared via video at the Regional Justice Center. Her parents and other sibling were present.
Defense attorney Brett Whipple says Carrion is devastated by the loss of her niece.
State prosecutors say Carrion – who was driving without a valid license – is at fault because she chose not to restrain the kids.
Whipple says witnesses have come forward saying another car caused the accident.
The judge set her bail at $70,000, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 11. Whipple says he would like Carrion to make bail so she can get some counseling.
