LAS VEGAS (KSNV – As thousands of students get ready to go back to school next week, local police want to make sure drivers slow down and watch out for young pedestrians.

School crossing guards help children cross the street safely.

Metro says the department has enough crossing guards – more than 400 – ready to help protect returning students.

North Las Vegas has more than 100 guards, but is looking to fill about eight more positions.

“We like to kick it off in the right way at the beginning of the year, so this way it kind of sets a precedent that we do have guards out there and we are looking for a safer way for our children to cross the roadways,” said North Las Vegas Police Officer Aaron Patty.
