LAS VEGAS (KSNV — Clark County officials joined members of the Southern Nevada Child Drowning Prevention Coalition today for the annual “April Pools Day” drowning prevention awareness campaign.

Clark County hosted the kickoff event at Wet `n’ Wild water park, 7055 S. Fort Apache Road, just south of Sunset Road. Clark County and the local cities take turns hosting April Pools Day each year to promote drowning prevention during the spring and summer months when swimming pools are in highest use in the Las Vegas Valley.

As part of this year’s kickoff, personnel from Clark County Fire Station 34 conducted a simulated near drowning and rescue demonstration to show how quickly accidents can occur around any body of water.

Later, Clark County and North Las Vegas firefighters and volunteers went to nearby neighborhoods to distribute drowning prevention materials to area homes.

“Drownings can occur any time during the year in the Las Vegas Valley but the risks increase as the weather warms up and swimming pools are in high use,” said Clark County Fire Chief Bertral Washington.

“One of the most important messages we try to get across during our April Pools Day event is to remind the public that under no circumstances should you ever leave children near a pool without adult supervision.”
