LAS VEGAS — A vacant downtown apartment building sustained heavy damage after in caught fire late Tuesday evening. The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no reported injuries.

Fire dispatchers received multiple 9-1-1 calls at 8:41 p.m. that there was a fire at the vacant AAvis Apartment building at 223 N. Ninth St. near Stewart Avenue.

There were also reports that people were screaming for help from the burning building.

When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the two-story apartment building. Firefighters entered the building but were only able to stay inside for a short time because the fire intensified.  As a result a second alarm was requested.

Shortly after heavy flames were seen coming through the roof and out some second story windows.

Within an hour firefighters had the bulk of the fire out.  Only remote places inside the building remained burning.  Firefighters had to douse the remaining hot spots form the outside due to the possibility of collapse inside the building.

Fire crews will remain on scene through the night watching over the building for possible flare ups

A search of the interior for possible victims will not take place until Wednesday morning.

The American Red Cross is assisting approximately eight people who are temporarily displaced from neighboring apartments due to smoke and power being shut off in the area due to wires being possibly damaged by the fire.

There have been a few minor fires, mostly mattress fires in this building in the past.  It is boarded up and appears secured.  Neighbors told fire investigators that homeless people were seen going in and out of the building on a routine basis. The fire is under investigation.
