LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) – A woman and her pet dog have died after a fire this afternoon in the 6400 block of Melody Rose Avenue, off North Torrey Pines Drive.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski says the fire appears accidental, possibly caused by careless smoking.

Firefighters pulled the victim, a woman in her early 60s, and her dog from a bedroom just after noon. They both appeared to be overcome by the thick, black smoke.

The American Red Cross is assisting another resident, who was not home at the time. Damage is estimated at $60,000. The fire gutted the bedroom, and the rest of the unit suffered smoke damage.

Investigators say the blaze was apparently an accident caused by careless smoking. Damage is estimated at $60,000.
