HENDERSON (KSNV MyNews3.com) – A 22-year-old Las Vegas man died this morning after the car he was a passenger in went off the roadway and overturned.
According to a news release from the Henderson Police Department, the driver, Jose Ortega-Guzman, 24, of Las Vegas was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was taken to Sunrise Hospital’s Trauma Unit for treatment.
Ortega-Guzman was driving a 2007 Nissan Versa northbound Monday about 3:15 a.m. on Stephanie Street from Sunset Road. As the car passed Galleria Drive, it began to veer to the right and slide sideways. The car struck a curb and rolled several times, coming to rest in a desert area east of Stephanie Street. The passenger died at the scene.
A preliminary investigation indicated that speed and alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash. Blood was drawn from Ortega-Guzman at the hospital for testing. He faces a DUI with death charge if his blood alcohol content is over the legal limit.
The roadway was closed for about four hours while fatal accident investigators conducted their investigation.
The Clark County coroner’s office will release the passenger’s name after his family has been notified.
The man’s death was the fifth traffic-related fatality in Henderson this year.
