LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- Two men are indicted on charges in a home invasion robbery and murder of an elderly woman in her northwest Las Vegas home.
Bayzle Morgan, 21, faces murder, burglary, robbery and kidnapping charges in the May 21 death of Jean Main, 75. Keith Smith, 46, who is suspected of being the getaway driver, faces burglary and conspiracy charges.
The slaying and burglary happened in a gated community in the 8000 block of Green Pasture Avenue, which sparked that neighborhood to take extra precautions.
Gated communities are all over the valley, and for residents, it gives them a sense of security. But police warn that even if you live on the other side of the gates, it does not mean you can let down your guard.
Those living within this gated community near Cimmaron and Lone Mountain Road are on high alert after main’s death. Residents are taking extra precautions, including house-sitters when they're out of town and installing better alarm systems.
Detectives say they believe Morgan jumped over Main's wall into the backyard, entered her home through an open sliding door and came out with her purse, hundreds of dollars in cash and electronics.
Police can't say it enough: Make sure your windows, doors and garage remain locked, even if you live within a gated community.
According to court documents, Main's boyfriend reported that when he left the house in the morning, he saw a car that appeared suspicious. Other neighbors saw it too, including one woman who told police it entered through the exit gate as she was leaving.
That car, police say, was the getaway car driven by smith.
Police ask the public that if they think something is out of place, speak up. Sometimes that attention may be just enough to deter that person from committing a crime.
