LAS VEGAS (KSNV — Some local groups have accused Metro police and a local church of using scare tactics to prevent premarital sex.

An event on Sunday called "Choose Purity” at the William Pearson Center presented scenarios that have left some confused; others are asking why police were involved.

One story involved a prostitute who contracted HIV and died. One teenager said connecting prostitution and HIV to abstinence is tough to do.

“I do not believe that should have been shown here at all, not even a little bit,” said Raela Carpentier, 17. “I don't see how it relates with those two subjects.”

The church in charge of the event refused requests for an interview.

A Metro release before the event announced, "The goal is to bring about awareness to the problem of teen pregnancy . . . and the long-term consequences."

On Tuesday, Metro released another statement: “In attempting to address issues affecting at-risk youths during an event on May 3, several groups gathered together to create an open conversation with teens in the community.

“The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was joined at Saturday’s event by partners at Purple Wings, the Southern Nevada Health District, the Southern Nevada Human Trafficking Task Force and the Victory Outreach Church.

“Metro’s primary role is ensuring the public’s safety. In support of this role, we also work to prevent crime through education. Some of the opinions expressed at the meeting did not represent those of the department.

“We do not want to take away from the good work that the Bolden Area Command has done through its Safe Village Initiative. The officers at Bolden Area Command are very vested in this community. Our partnership with both faith-based and non-profit groups has transformed the community and greatly reduced crime thanks to the hours of hard work by officers.”
