LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has released the name of the officer involved in a fatal shooting Tuesday morning near West Twain Road and Lindell Avenue.
Officer John Wiggins, 41, has been employed with Metro since January 2002. He is currently assigned to the Emergency Operations Bureau, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Section.
Wiggins has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a review of this event.
According to a Metro news release, officers were called to a residence on Maceta Avenue just after 3:20 a.m. on Tuesday in response to reports of a man armed with a rifle and acting erratically. Arriving patrol officers noticed an adult male subject, identified as Travis Doering, 40, of Las Vegas, pacing in front of the residence carrying a rifle.
A patrol officer, certified as a Crisis Intervention Team member, was able to contact Doering on the phone and spoke with him for approximately one hour. During that time, Doering went into and came out of the residence armed with the rifle.
While officers were talking with the suspect, the LVMPD SWAT unit was requested and they responded to the scene. As SWAT officers were taking up positions near the residence, Doering came out of the residence armed with the rifle, and pointed the rifle in the direction of two uniformed patrol officers.
At that time, the SWAT officer shot Doering, who was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.
This is the sixth officer-involved shooting of 2014.
