LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- The man suspected in a fatal carjacking that began on the Strip and ended near the Rio Hotel and Casino appeared in court this morning for the first time.

James Montgomery, 29, wore a bandage on his head during his appearance and was joined by family members at the Regional Justice Center.

Montgomery is facing multiple charges -- including murder and kidnapping -- after Metro police say he stole a California Highway Patrolman’s truck on Sunday at the Flamingo Hotel, then wrecked the vehicle with the CHP officer and another man in the truck bed, near the Rio Hotel.

The two victims, 33-year old Jesus Manuel Magdaleno Jr., a CHP officer, and 31-year old Felix Brandon Cruz III, were thrown from the truck when Montgomery allegedly ran a red light another vehicle at an intersection near the Rio. Magdaleno died at the scene. Cruz died from his injuries Monday night.

Montgomery is schedule to appear for a preliminary hearing Sept. 4.
