LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) – One person is dead this afternoon after a shooting involving Nevada Highway Patrol and the Bureau of Land Management near the Red Rock Campground.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson says the incident was reported just after noon on State Route 159 near mile marker 11.

According to Hixson, two BLM rangers approached a pedestrian on the shoulder of State Route 159 after a report of a suspicious person.

An NHP trooper showed up minutes later. There was an altercation, and according to NHP, the pedestrian was shot and killed when officers felt threatened. NHP has not indicated whether the pedestrian was armed.

NHP said Metro police detectives are leading the investigation. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the case.

State Route 159 through Red Rock Canyon remains closed near the Calico Basin turnoff as of 4:10 p.m.
