NORTH LAS VEGAS (KSNV — After allegations of preventable deaths, long waits for medical care and falsified appointment records, politicians are scrambling to find solutions concerning the Veterans Affairs Department.

U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nev., visited veterans at the VA hospital in North Las Vegas on Tuesday to find out what they are facing. He said their biggest complaint were delays.

“I talked to veterans who were waiting an hour almost two hours for an appointment that they were scheduled for,” Horsford said. “Come to find out one of the reasons is they have three of the positions in that particular department that are unfilled.”

Horsford says these positions are already budgeted for. However, the problem is attracting the employees. They are often paid less than what those in the private sector get.

Horsford added that hospital officials say they expect to fill 20 empty positions in the next few weeks.
