NORTH LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) – A man is dead this morning after leading police on a chase, which ended with an officer firing at the suspect.
According to a news release, North Las Vegas Police officers attempted to stop a man driving a moped around 1:30 a.m. near Ann Road and Camino Al Norte. He refused to stop, leading officers on a low-speed vehicle pursuit. During the pursuit, the man abandoned his vehicle in the front yard of a home in the 700 block of Rio Royal Way and continued fleeing on foot.
On the 6000 block of Revere, the man turned and confronted officers drawing what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun. The officer closest in proximity to the suspect shot him multiple times. He was transported to UMC Trauma, where he later died.
Investigators recovered a pellet gun that was a replica of a black semi-automatic handgun from the shooting scene. A backpack that the suspect abandoned during the pursuit also was recovered. It contained an additional replica of a black semi-automatic handgun.
The Clark County coroner’s office will release the identity of the suspect after official identification and notification of next of kin.
The 29-year-old officer is a six-year veteran of the department and has been placed on routine paid administrative leave. The next scheduled release of information will be Monday, when the involved officer will be identified per Nevada law.
This is the second fatal officer-involved shooting in North Las Vegas this year.
