NORTH LAS VEGAS (KSNV — A Florida company wants to create a project in North Las Vegas that will recycle waste to generate power, but some residents are against the plan.

Enviropower says it will create hundreds of jobs with a green and safe gasification plant. The multimillion-dollar project will convert light construction and dry waste into synthetic gas to generate electricity for up to 50,000 homes.

The North Las Vegas Planning Commission unanimously approved the project, but property owner Jason Jensen has appealed that decision. He fears this is the first step to drawing outside waste into the city if there isn't enough here to fuel the plant.

He also said he believes the plant will emit hazardous materials, bring down property costs, and present safety issues.

A protest is planned for 10:30 a.m. today at the plant site, 2900 E. Lone Mountain Road.
