LAS VEGAS (KSNV — Scammers are using a foreign area code to dupe victims into paying high phone charges.

This Rip-Off Alert is called the "809 Area Code Scam."

Victims receive a message telling them to call a number with an 809, 284, 649 or 876 area code to collect a prize or find out information about a relative who is supposedly sick.

The victim assumes the area code is in the U.S., but the number is actually in Canada or Caribbean and pays high international call rates.

Victims don't learn that until it is too late.

AT&T is putting out the warning and telling customers to return calls they recognize or look up the number before you dial.

Read your bill carefully to make sure you spot anything out of line.

If you believe you've been scammed, call your carrier to see if they can help remove the fraudulent charges.
