LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Kids are soaking up the last days of summer vacation as the first day of the new school year approaches a week from Monday.

Teachers are already hard at work, preparing for the first day. Instructors are not required to be in the classroom until Wednesday, but many already are setting things up.

Their goal is to make their spaces engaging and fun for their new students.

First grade teacher Todd Hine is painting the walls of his classroom at Bracken Elementary because he says attention to detail matters.

"I was scared to death with first grade and then I got in here and after a couple of weeks started to see the impact I had on them and there’s no measurement you can get from that,” Hine says. “It's just incredible."

With the opening day so close, the Clark County School District still needs to fill 600 fulltime positions.
