LAS VEGAS (KSNV – A suspect has been arrested in the stabbing death of a man at an apartment near Nellis Boulevard and North Christy Lane.

Elita Maldanado, 31, is in the Clark County Detention Center on assault charges. She is expected to face murder and robbery charges Tuesday morning at the Regional Justice Center in the death of William Sanford, 49, who was found slain May 29 at an apartment in the 5800 block of Meikle Lane.

According to a Metro arrest warrant, the apartment manager alerted officers that there were bloody footprints leading out of Sanford’s apartment. His parents arrived shortly thereafter, telling officers that North Las Vegas police had informed them that their son’s 2003 Cadillac was found abandoned in North Las Vegas.

One witness told police that he heard “yelling and banging” coming from Sanford’s apartment the night before and that he could hear Sanford yelling for help. The witness also said that he saw the suspect take Sanford’s car and said it was strange to see that because Sanford was very protective of his vehicle.

Surveillance video from a store nearby led detectives to identify Maldanado, who was already in police custody in Uinta County, Wyo. Metro detectives interviewed Maldanado in Wyoming. She told them Sanford had picked her up near 13th and Fremont streets for paid sex. They also talked about a continuing relationship as Maldanado asked Sanford to help her locate her daughters.

After they had sex, Maldanado said she heard her daughter’s voice in her head, telling her that Sanford hurt her daughters, according to the police report. Maldanado said she then picked up a barbell and hit Sanford on the forehead.

The two fought, then Maldanado left the room, with Sanford following, threatening to kill her. The fight wound up in the kitchen, with Sanford’s hands around Maldanado’s neck. She said she reached back and grabbed a knife from the butcher block knife holder and stabbed Sanford, according to police.

Maldanado said she panicked, tried to clean up, grabbed Sanford’s phone and took his car. After running out of gas, she then got a ride to the Plaza and hopped on a cargo train with the intention of heading to Phoenix. Instead, the train went to Wyoming.
