LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- Law enforcement officials are investigating a sophisticated ring of thieves targeting hotel guests.

While Metro is still looking into whether there are local cases, NBC’s Dave Elias has more in this Rip-Off Alert on what happened to Florida guests.

The guests are in their rooms, and everything is going great until this call from a scammer.

“Listen, this is the front desk,” the scammer says. “There is a problem with your credit card, and we need to confirm the number and information on that and try to rerun it.”

Because of this scam most hotels are now requiring outside calls to not only provide the room number but the guests name as well.

But the scammers are actually bypassing that security check. They're renting rooms inside the hotel and calling rooms directly.

So far one Fort Myers, Fla., hotel reported two of its guests have become victims.
