More than 500 red light violators ticketed in Henderson

HENDERSON – Officers handed out more than 500 tickets to motorists running red lights during a recent enforcement effort targeting intersections that ended Friday.

Henderson Police officers, joined by officers from Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, Boulder City Police, Mesquite Police and Nevada Highway Patrol, targeted intersections in Henderson over the past three weeks.

The officers issued 520 tickets to motorists for running red lights and an additional 132 citations for motorists using cell phones while driving. The officers also issued a number of tickets for drivers with no insurance, registration violations and driving on a revoked, suspended or expired driver’s license.

In 2012, motor vehicle crashes killed 258 people on Nevada roadways. Alcohol was a contributing factor in 42 of those deaths, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety – Office of Traffic Safety.

In Nevada, 58 pedestrians died in traffic crashes in 2012. Of the fatal pedestrian traffic crashes in the state last year, 42 occurred in Clark County with five of those occurring in Henderson.

So far this year, 76 people have died on Nevada roadways; one fatal accident has occurred in Henderson so far this year.

The Henderson Police Traffic Unit received funding from the Department of Public Safety - Office of Traffic Safety, as part of the Joining Forces Grant. The grant provides funding for enforcement and education to reduce deaths and injuries on Nevada roadways.

The grant will assist in funding special enforcement details throughout the year targeting seat belt usage, DUIs, pedestrian safety and speeding violations.
