If your child is a fabulous four, get ready for the most imaginative play yet. Four-year-olds are able to plan, organize, and modify their games to suit almost any situation. Dress-up or role- playing and building impressive structures with blocks or other manipulatives are popular indoor activities for four-year-olds. Caregivers will usually try to vary activities every twenty minutes or so to suit this age group's attention span. Many four-year-olds are eager to learn new skills and to mimic older children, so don't be surprised if your caregiver introduces basic math and reading concepts to your child. The flurry of activity around a group of four year olds may be thrilling to them, but you'll probably notice that your caregiver still schedules quiet times to allow them to relax. One popular activity during these moments is reading to the children. Does your caregiver encourage your child to re-tell a story by looking at the pictures? Advocates of the whole language method of learning to read believe that recall and analysis of pictures aid children in preparing to figure out words. Some four-year-olds may even recognize basic words.
