LAKE MEAD (KSNV -- A man and a woman were killed Thursday evening while attempting to land a home-built aircraft in nearly dark conditions on a landing strip meant for daytime use only.

The crash and fire occurred about 9 p.m. at a landing strip near Echo Bay in the northeastern section of the park south of Overton.

"An unknown event termed an upset caused the pilot to lose control of the aircraft," National Transportation Safety Board investigator Patrick Jones told News 3 on Saturday afternoon. "He was attempting to land the plane in dusk to almost dark conditions. He obviously didn't mean to land where he did and a post-impact fire thermally destroyed the aircraft."

Jones said the aircraft was home-built and completed in 1999. He said the pilot was not the person who built the plane.

Jones and the Clark County coroner's office confirmed that a man and a woman died in the crash and ensuing fire.

The coroner's office did not have a positive identification as of Saturday morning.

Jones said the pilot owned a trailer in Echo Bay and the flight originated in Minden.

Jones is leading the investigation into the crash and said he was completing interviews this weekend. He expected to release an initial report within five days, but determining the cause of the crash could take months.
