LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- The government shutdown is now beginning to affect some of Santa’s hardest working elves.

Toys for Tots, the annual toy collection program sponsored by the United States Marine Corps Reserve, is on hold until the government re-opens.

It's one of the unexpected consequences many families might not have considered.

According to the Las Vegas Toys for Tots website, the partial government shutdown is affecting community relations with the Marine Corps.

And toys for Tots is not an expected activity.

That hurts because, believe it or not, this is prime toy collecting season.

Toy collecting begins October 1. That was the very day the government shut down. Toys for Tots is already two weeks behind.

Here in southern Nevada. the non-profit provides thousands of toys to needy kids during the holiday season. They also give toys to other charities such as the Salvation Army.

Major Rhonda Lloyd says it's frustrating to think how the shutdown could affect children.

“School will be affected, they receive toys from those agencies, as do children with the Salvation Army. Foster children will be affected. So it's hard to say how far reaching the impact will be. But the people of Southern Nevada are very generous, so we're counting on them to come through. We always do, we always manage to find a way, and we believe that will happen again this year,” said Major Rhonda Lloyd with Salvation Army."

The Toys for Tots program has been around since 1947. Local organizers say don't give up on them this year, the government shutdown can't last forever.
