HENDERSON (KSNV -- It's been almost a week since a local teenager was accidentally shot and killed, and that tragedy has a lot of people talking gun safety.

A local charter school, Pinecrest Academy in Henderson, is considering a move to train its students how to use guns.

Because this is a charter school, parents and staff get to make choices independent of the Clark County School District.

Classes are out for summer, but when students return in fall, their parents may have the option to enroll them in a gun safety class that would be taught at a firing range by certified instructors.

According to its website, Pinecrest Academy serves students K-8. Its electives include such classes as music and computer training. But next year, firearms training could be added to the list.

It would be optional and off-campus and the first such class to be held within the Clark County School District.

The move comes on the heels of a tragic accident last week when police say 13-year-old Brooklynn Mohler of Henderson was shot by a friend at a Las Vegas home.

The accident sparked a conversation parents at Pinecrest tells us, so far, has been welcome at their school.

“Frankly with all the accidents that are happening in homes maybe if these kids had firearms training properly, maybe we wouldn't have these accidents,” said Stephen Stubbs, a parent at Pinecrest Academy of Nevada. “It actually came as a request from multiple parents. There were multiple parents who remembered a time about how schools used to do firearms training.”
