LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- A purse-snatch suspect eluded several Metro officers -- including a motorcycle patrolman, a helicopter pilot, and dogs -- after grabbing a UMC patient's purse Sunday afternoon.

Metro Lt. John Loretto told News 3 they received a call at 4:50 p.m. about a patient who had gone outside UMC to smoke in a smoking area along Charleston Avenue.

"The suspect came by and snatched her purse and took off into the industrial area by Charleston and I-15," Loretto said. "That's near the Bolden and Downtown area commands so several cars responded and we set up a perimeter."

"The suspect is a thin black male in his 20s. He was shedding clothes as he ran and a motorcycle officer spotted him and chased him for 3 or 4 minutes, but he got away," Loretto told News 3.

Metro even had canine and helicopter units respond, but the thief escaped as darkness set on the valley.

"He was wearing a red ball cap, a red and black shirt, and blue jeans at first but he kept shedding clothes," the Metro watch commander said.

The Metro effort to find the suspect lasted about an hour.
