LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Popeye, a former police dog diagnosed with cancer, has died.

Fundraisers had been organized  to raise money for Popeye's surgery. Unfortunately, the veterinarian last night discovered that the cancer had spread to the point that it was inoperable and terminal.

Out of quality of life concerns for Popeye, the decision was made to euthanize him.

Popeye, a retired cop, albeit a four-legged one, was diagnosed this year with cancer and his owner did not have the money for surgery.

For the better part of a decade, Popeye's served as a police dog. The black German Shepherd spent his days sniffing through packages, prison cells and cars. He job was to hunt for, which he often found, illegal drugs or contraband.

He located millions of dollars in narcotics, keeping them off the street, thanks to his well-trained nose.
