LAS VEGAS (KSNV – Investigators with the San Diego Police Department reported Wednesday that a Las Vegas Boy Scout died of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound at a campsite near Fiesta Island.

It remains unclear whether 12-year-old William Shook’s death was accidental or intentional. His Scout unit, Las Vegas Troop 50, was spending a week at the aquatics camp.

William was shot the morning of June 30 with an unregistered handgun at a Boy Scout camp. Police say one boy was inside the tent with William, and another was outside.

San Diego police have turned over the case regarding the unregistered handgun to Metro. Charges remain possible. The adults at the camp, including William’s father, say they have no idea how the gun got into the camp.

San Diego police did not release additional information.
