Mental health, emergency rooms on board's agenda

LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- A crisis in Southern Nevada's emergency rooms will be one of the top items discussed Monday and Tuesday as a board recently formed by the governor meets here.

Gov. Brian Sandoval's Behavioral Health and Wellness Council will meet starting at 9 a.m. Monday in room 4401 of the Grant Sawyer Building at 555 E. Washington Ave.

With patients who need assistance with mental health needs going to various emergency rooms across the Las Vegas Valley, critical beds needed for emergencies have been occupied for several days at a time.

Some emergency rooms were forced to close to new patients during a week in February and 100 beds or more needed for medical emergencies are occupied beds are occupied by mental health patients on a daily basis.

Several groups are working on solutions to the problem and should present some options to the panel this week.
