LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Metro officers say they shot the man wanted for a brutal slaying of a local woman.

Nathan Benson, 27, was taken to UMC. He is now in the Clark County Detention Center and will have a court hearing Wednesday.

Shanna Ralson, 44, told police as she was dying who stabbed her, and thanks to a couple of Good Samaritans, they were able to track him down in the west part of the valley.

Police say they received several calls from witnesses saying they had spotted the man police had been looking for since the stabbing early Sunday.

Several witnesses they saw Benson in the area of Rainbow and Alta.

When police arrived they found Benson walking down the street in plain sight.

When they tried to stop him he took off running – that’s when police say he flashed a knife.

“At this point the officers saw Mr. Benson had a knife in his hands,” said Metro Deputy Chief Jim Owens. “He then charged the officers. He refused commands to put the knife down, and two officers fired their weapons.”

Police hit Benson at least once. He is currently at UMC, and his condition is unknown.

Police had been looking for Benson since Ralston was found stabbed to death Sunday outside her own home.

According to friends of Ralston's family, Benson's mother was Ralston's roommate.

They also say Benson had a history of violence in the neighborhood, recently threatening other people with a knife.

Police say it was Ralston who told them Benson was the man who stabbed her.
