HENDERSON (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- A witness shares his account of what happened Tuesday morning when Henderson police returned fire and killed a man who had been shooting at another officer.

“I came out of the 7-11 and ‘Bam bam bam bam bam,’ all of a sudden gunshots,” said Steve Stuhlman.

Just before Stuhlmann opened up his smog shop on Boulder Highway and College Road, he was tossed right next to the police shootout.

“I mean, every cop car in the city must have converged on that spot in 30 seconds,” he said. “They were out there one after another with their guns tracking that guy down.”

Henderson police say a 63-year-old man rode his motorcycle to the area, walked up to the median and fired shots at a marked patrol car, shattering a window.

The officer was controlling traffic for an unrelated accident down the block.

“She looked to her left and saw a man firing a handgun at her,” said Keith Paul of the Henderson Police Department. “She was able to put her car in drive and move forward while calling out on the radio shots fired.”

Police say responding officers saw a man crossing Boulder Highway and that's when he started firing. The officers returned fire.

The officers were not injured, but police found three handguns on the suspect and a rifle on his motorcycle.

Hours later, police activity swarmed a neighborhood near Rochelle and Chesapeake Way. SWAT and Henderson police served a search warrant at the suspect's home – less than 10 minutes from the crime scene -- as neighbors watched the investigation unfold.

Detectives are still trying to figure out why he ambushed the officers. There is no clear motive at this point.

The names of the three officers involved in the shooting will be released later this week. The Clark County coroner's office will release the name of the suspect.
