LAS VEGAS (KSNV – A hearing for the woman at the center of a nearly daylong standoff and hostage situation was rescheduled this morning because her lawyer said she was in a medically induced coma.

Frank P. Kocka, the attorney for Sara Jones, says doctors placed his client in that condition because of her mental state. Jones had been shot in the face after firing on Metro officers, striking one in the lower leg, during the standoff this past week in the 4500 block of Newton Drive, near Mountain Vista and Tropicana.

Police say the woman's husband and 10-year-old child got out of the house before police were called to a domestic dispute a little after 11 p.m. Aug. 26.

The woman stayed barricaded inside all day with her 2- and 3-year-old boys. Around 9 p.m. Aug. 27, a shot was heard in the residence and officers entered. As officers approached the bedroom, Jones began firing through the closed bedroom door with her handgun, striking one of the officers in the lower leg.

Jones, holding one of the two juvenile hostages and still armed, retreated into a bathroom where she attempted to barricade. SWAT officers quickly removed the second remaining juvenile from the bedroom and breached the bathroom door, with one officer firing at Jones.

Jones has been booked in absentia on six counts of attempted murder of a police officer with a deadly weapon; two counts of first-degree kidnapping, three counts of child endangerment with a deadly weapon; resisting an officer with a deadly weapon; and assault with a deadly weapon.

The status check for Jones has been rescheduled for 7:30 a.m. Oct. 4 at the Regional Justice Center.
