LAS VEGAS — An apartment was gutted this morning by a fire at the Charleston Garden Apartments on the city’s’ east side. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and there were no reported injuries.

Firefighters from Las Vegas and Clark County responded just after 6:35 a.m. to the apartments in the 4800 block of East Charleston Boulevard. On arrival there was heavy fire showing from one second-floor apartment in the two story wood frame apartment building that has 32 units. Firefighters evacuated the building and had the fire out in a few minutes.

The fire was confined to one unit, but another unit below had slight water damage. Three residents in the water-damaged unit are displaced and being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The unit that was on fire is vacant, and residents in the complex told fire investigators that squatters have been going in and out of the vacant apartments.

Damage to the building is estimated at $35,000.
