NORTH LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- An officer stationed at Nellis Air Force Base is on trial for sexual assault.

Maj. Charles Cox is accused of touching the buttocks and anus of an airman first class while the man was asleep on Aug. 4, 2012.

Cox is facing charges of abuse and sexual assault; conduct unbecoming of an officer and gentleman; and being drunk and disorderly.

He's also accused of making sexual comments toward enlisted women in the Air Force. The crimes are believed to have taken place in or near Las Vegas.

Before Tuesday’s proceedings, Cox offered to resign his Air Force commission to avoid a trial, but the written request was rejected by the secretary of the Air Force.

If convicted for abusive sexual contact, Cox could be dismissed from duty or dishonorably discharged, confined for seven years and required to forfeit all pay and allowances.

Nellis Air Force Base officials say in the past five years they've had no sexual assault convictions, but they would not say how many sexual assault allegations were made.
