LAS VEGAS (KSNV – Charges against man accused of a slaying inside a hotel room Monday night at South Point Casino have been dismissed.

Matejs Balodis, 22, a foreign exchange student from Latvia, had faced an open murder charge. His lawyer argued that it was self-defense, and prosecutors said there was not evidence to proceed with the case.

According to the police report, Balodis had been studying in Texas and was making his way back to Europe when he stopped in Las Vegas. During his layover, he befriended a man, who Balodis said appeared nice and helped him get a room at South Point after his flight to New York was canceled.

Balodis, according to police, said the man wanted to get his money and credit card PIN. He said that he was scared for his safety because the man became upset when he tried to retrieve his personal information.

They became involved in a physical altercation, and Balodis, according to the report, struck the victim several times in the head and face. When the victim “passed out,” Balodis called hotel security and 9-1-1.
